about

In the summer of 2016, Jon sent a bunch of demos to the other members of The Miracle Sweat. At the time, Jon lived (and still lives) in Victoria, and the other band members lived in and around the GTA. A plan was struck to rehearse and record these new songs as quickly as possible to catch the energy and spontaneity that tends to fuel this particular group of musicians. (The album release was delayed due to a number of scheduling conflicts. Somewhat ironic given the expediency with which the recording was executed!)

Over the course of a week, starting at 8 am, the band would gather at The Root Down; an amazingly vibe-y rehearsal/performance space in Toronto. We would practice a new song as if we were performing live, and once we thought we had a solid arrangement, we would hit record and get all of the rhythm tracks live, generally in one or two takes. Some of the vocals were from those live run-throughs, and some were recorded later (partly because Jon was still working out some of the lyrics).

Horns, harmonies, additional lead vocals, percussion, and some piano were recorded a little later in a few different studios, but the bulk of what you hear is a band really getting their heads around a tune for the first time. No click track, no samples, no auto-tune; just people in tune and in time with each other.
